Once a troubled kid, it is remarkable to think that a job as a summer camp counselor would be the catalyst for Dr. Simmons’ progressive career as a mental health professional. Dr. Simmons has served as an administrative and clinical leader in various positions for over 15 years acquiring experience with child welfare, individuals with developmental disabilities, severe and persistent mental illness and more. In this capacity, Dr. Simmons has excelled as an innovative trouble-shooter with an ability to process complex situations promptly. She has a knack for empowering mental health professionals by motivating and equipping them to deliver services to very challenging populations with empathy. As a clinician, Dr. Simmons employs a trauma-informed approach while remaining solution-focused so that her clients are properly engaged in their wellness journey. She is trained in Cognitive Processing Therapy, Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Child Parent Psychotherapy.
Dr. Simmons, also commonly known as a Dr. Sh’nai has a reputation in the community as an outstanding clinician, trainer and program administrator. Trained as a ropes course instructor Dr. Sh’nai utilizes those skills to reinforce her workshops and retreats. Dr. Sh’nai’s role as a Compassion Fatigue trainer further expands her resourcefulness to the community and human service providers such as Child Protective Investigators, early childhood providers, and faith-based leaders.
Dr. Sh’nai’s professional training is undergirded by her own experience as a social services recipient and personal exposure to trauma and reinforced by her Christian faith. Dr. Sh’nai’s personal roles as wife, mom, grandmother, friend, teacher, and mentor motivate her to stay committed to ensuring excellence in service while extending compassion and hope to create a legacy of wellness.
Dr. Simmons has a Master’s degree in Community Counseling and a doctorate degree in Counselor Education and Supervision from Regent University. She is licensed to practice professionally in the states of Virginia and Florida and has a virtual presence for consultation with individuals in other states. She has an extensive history of supporting local agencies with her expertise and helping their efforts to dialogue with their stakeholders. Dr. Sh’nai is a passionate mental health professional, public speaker, and community activist who is focused on bringing restoration to communities and committed to “helping people use what they have to get what they want.”
